AI Tip Sheets

Summary

AI Tip Sheets is a non-profit tool for reporters to discover ideas for stories. Fully automated and driven by legislative events like bill hearings, Tip Sheets are generated on an AI trained to recognize patterns or “phenoms,” that when compounded, signify a level of potential newsworthiness (e.g., a legislator voting against the wishers of their donors, or X number of legislators from the same denomination recorded as no-shows during a vote).

Client: CalMatters

Role: Lead UX Designer

Activities:

  • Research
  • Heuristic evaluations
  • Data storytelling
  • Data visualization
  • Roadmaping
  • Design

Process Details:

I’ve worked with CalMatters product owners and reporters, CalPoly data scientists, and our own designers and engineers to evolve the AI Tip Sheets over the year. I’ve performed usability audits, data storytelling explorations, new mental models (e.g., My Coverage vs. Explore mode), designs and prototypes, and contributed ideas to the road map, all within a very tight budget.

The project is ongoing and I’m currently working on ways to on-budget continuous research, and utilize the community of reporters for feature prioritization and early testing.
